Hi, Im trying to find the latest version ( hopefully 5 ) for my W95
for offline testing.
I have found binaries of version 5+ for W95 but I didnt jump to the
conclusion that it
would be compatible with W95. So I just want to know :
- What is the latest version from the museum that I can download for
W95
- Is there a way for me to manually install it, I read a message that
was posted here,
that said that all you needed to do was to make a directory from C:/
called PHP, and
move some files to either the c:/windows or c:/windows/system
folder.... I believe....
is this true?
Thanks 8 1387

I wouldn't even try to run PHP on W95. W95 has been unsupported for at
least 5 years.
It doesn't cost that much to get a new system with at least WinXP home
edition. And that is supported.

There is an article which may help at: http://www.thesitewizard.com/archive/php4install.shtml
The php site tells you which is the latest version that will support W95,
do a search, it seems to be under maintenance at the moment so I can't
provide a link.
Historic versions are at: http://uk2.php.net/releases/
That's a UK link, you may have a local one.
As Jerry said you really ought to consider upgrading your OS if you can,
life would be much easier for you. Don't even think about Vista though :-(
If you're not wedded to Windows you can just as well develop on a Linux
machine, it runs well even on PC's that may be considered under-powered
for Windows.

Well I have Windows XP on a HP brand laptop and I called the dealer at
CompUSA who sold me
the computer, warned me strongly that I shouldnt be using a laptop for
software or
website development, becuase the AMD TURION64 in my motherboard is not
fast enough
to process files for a offline PHP server. For that matter, he said
that only desktops
with Intels chips can be used for PHP website development or for that
matter any
software development. Most importantly he emphasized, "Dont use
Laptops" for software
development. Then he went on to state that AMD CPUs are not built like
Intel chips
to endure long hours of abuse from software development. Then he said
that a windows 95 computer
should be sufficient enough to support a PHP system as long as it has
a intel chip such as
a P2. Which is what I have...

Huh? Even an old i486 CPU is fast enough for that.
>For that matter, he said that only desktops with Intels chips can be used for PHP website development or for that matter any software development.
Is he on drugs? What does the CPU have to do with the kind of
applications that you can run on it? How does software developing
differ from text processing or image rendering in terms of CPU load?
>Most importantly he emphasized, "Dont use Laptops" for software development.
Even the most cheap laptops today have much more power and possibilities
than my local server, which works perfectly well. Software development
means nothing for the CPU, it's running idle cycles most of the time.
>Then he went on to state that AMD CPUs are not built like Intel chips
That's correct, but doesn't matter.
>to endure long hours of abuse from software development.
"Abuse from software development"? *ROFL*
>Then he said that a windows 95 computer should be sufficient enough to support a PHP system as long as it has a intel chip such as a P2. Which is what I have...
Maybe you could ask this idiot what would happen on an AMD box. And then
_definitely_ change your hardware supplier, because this guy doesn't
really know what he's talking about.

You can't be serious. People actually listen to those assholes? And
you're wanting to do software development?
OK Lesson #1. NEVER EVER EVER EVER trust a salesperson. EVER. If he
starts talking about something you don't understand fully, demand to
see facts backing up what he/she is saying. As others have pointed
out, 99% of what he told you is utter bullshit, and easily proven as
such.
Lesson #2. NEVER EVER EVER EVER buy a computer from a chain store
like CompUSA or Best Buy or Circuit City. Buy a Dell if you have to,
but put together your own machine if you can. It's not rocket
science, and forgive me for saying so, but I think you could use the
technical experience.
Lesson #3. Windows 95? Seriously? No, seriously? What are you
thinking? If you want to re-use an old machine then download Linux or
*BSD and use that without the X Windows system.
If, however, my suspicions are true, and you're just a troll, then
please jump off a bridge.

Never been to a computer super-store, eh?
The salesfolks there are notorious for giving not just bad advice, but the
craziest pack of unnecessary lies you'll ever hear anywhere.
I had one tell me that I needed to "reverse" my ethernet cable - that one
side was an A, and the other a B, and that I might have them backwards.
There was no REASON for him to tell that lie.
He just wanted to sound like a big-shot.

I was about to cobble together a new P4 box.
I went to MicroCenter to get the parts - about $700 worth.
Then, the salesperson pointed out that everything I was about to get was
available in a $200 refurbished Dell.
These refurbished fellas are da bomb.
Here's a product review for the Dell:
