What mysql datatype do I need to use for:

a) crypt on PHP
b) crypt on on mysql

but varchar(1), varchar(100), ... ?

Does it depend on something and if so what?

It depend on what encryption crypt use, and this depend on the system php is
running on and what is available. Just use crypt and echo the length of the
hashed string.
