Passing a php variable to a perl script

I read some discussion on this topic however I am faced with the same problem of passing a php variable into a perl script. I want to pass a string from a php script to a perl script which is called within the php script.

I have tried the sugesstions given but I cant get through. Could someone expain to me step by step (including examples if possible).

I have used the system(), exec() and I have failed. Please assist!

Is the perl script a page that should be called from the web server, or is it something that should run independently?
