Unable to install PHP on Linux to work with Apache

I compile the latest source for php, but when I try to load php module in
Apache, I get this error message

Cannot load /usr/local/apache2/modules/libphp5.so into server:
/usr/local/apache2/modules/libphp5.so: undefined symbol: _efree

Any help ?
