php 5 oop

P: 2
hi there

I am new to php.

I've used procedural programming to develop a few applications. php 5 has been talking about oop approach to develop applications. I tried to use oop thinking in my new project and found it is not much different from the procedural ones -- just like grouping a bunch of functions together.

anyone having any advice on how to better understand and apply oop in php applications?

any advice and thought is appreciated. thanx!

I don't know what you have been expecting from OOP in PHP5? Of course, basically it is not more than a bunch of methods concentrated around an object. But that way you could also state that the Basic language is no more than a bunch of instructions and thus not much different from the Java language.

If you look at the subjects in the OOP5 documentation, you will see that there are quite a few topics that you will not find in procedural PHP, such as:
Autoloading Objects
Constructors and Destructors
Visibility
Scope Resolution Operator (::)
Static Keyword
Class Constants
Class Abstraction
Object Interfaces
Overloading
Object Iteration
Patterns
Magic Methods
Final Keyword
Object cloning
Comparing objects
Reflection
Type Hinting
Have a look at the php documentation about the php5 oop. Maybe that explains it better. http://nl3.php.net/manual/en/language.oop5.php
