Slackware PHP problem

Hi all,

I installed Apache, enabled PHP and made sure that MySQL
starts when I boot up.

Now I am seeing a bizarre problem. The following HTML
produces the wrong response from PHP. How to fix?

<html>
<?
print ('this is a test ') ;
// abc 123
?>

Result in Firefox:

this is a test '); // abc123 ?>

(The same happens if I use <?PHP and if I put
the string in double quotes.)

Thus I ask, is it normal for PHP to begin
processing normally but when just ignore
the second quote character, be it single or double?

Thanks.

Maybe you should test against a "Hello World" script that is known to
work before you start blaming the server:

This area is designed to become quite warm during normal operation.

For some reason, the script block is not interpreted. Possibly, short tag
support is disabled in your configuration.

Try starting the script blocks with <?php and see if this works.

I tried it, it gives no result.

Note, httpd and MySQL are both running, and
the command from the man page, something like
php -e " echo ('foo'); "
works as well.

I tried that too, it doesn't work.

This isn't the first time I've seen Apache/PHP not work well
under Slackware, I might note.

abnormalities with other commands too?

echo "does this work";

Do your files have the extension .php?

It Apache set up to parse .php files as php?

Thanks. I just assumed that because PHP is embeddable in HTML
that I could put it in an HTML file. Foolish of me.

Of course you can, but then you have to tell the server to look for PHP
code in .html files. Everything is possible, you just have to configure
it.
