I have gotten the idea that buying books on programming is bad when they

I want to buy a good begining book on PHP, but should i make sure that the
publication date is in 2003 or 2004?
I've been developing in PHP since 1998 and the first PHP book I ever bought
was this year - I've always found the manual is just so damn good that
there was little point buying a book.
The book I did buy was Sitepoint's PHP anthology. You can download PDF
chapters before you actually decide to buy it which is great. I mainly only
bought it for the 2nd book which covers some useful applications but since
receiving it have still to have a good read through it...
Anyway, the book is at

To actually answer your question, I would agree it's better to buy more
recent books if they are available.
