Php Gd... when white is not white

Hi forum,
Below is a sample code that creates a "white" gif image. I want to know... why the background result color is FEFCFE intead of white (FFFFFF)? When I use imagecreate instead of imagecreatetruecolor, the white color is OK.

See the php documentation on images at PHP Image Handling which states that

This function will not work with GIF file formats.
