What's a cron job?

What, exactly, is a cron job? A PHP script that runs server side, nonstop?

Windows they are known as Scheduled Tasks.

A cron demon? Oh, no... :-P I used to fiddle around with linux about... 10
years ago. Although, I do want to make a web-browser based game in PHP, but
I need timed events to happen behind the scenes. I haven't actually gotten
into it, I just am doing... research.
Actually it can be program or script (php, shell, perl, whatever) which
is run by the cron daemon periodically. The description of how to do
this is usually in the "man" pages of the Unix system where the cron job
is running.

The definition also encompasses a few 3rd party tools that have been made
over the years to duplicate and/or improve upon CRON capabilities... some
specifically for win for those who are not fond of the win scheduler.

I prefer a system service, with job setup in a central database, so that the
app and jobs are more easily ported from one computer to another, with less
setup time. Fail-over is easier to handle this way. But for a single PC
need, cron or scheduler is fine.

Cheers!
