Tutorial recommendations

Hi, I have a couple of questions:

1. Does anyone have any tutorial recommendations for an absoloute PHP beginner? I have done a little html and css coding to date but that is it.

2. Is PHP considered best practice from a w3c-compliant web development perspective? Is XML an alternative?

Ah - have just noticed the great big "Tutorials" tab up there in the nav...how about I try that out before asking here?

As for 1., there are several PHP beginners courses. The better ones are:
W3Schools PHP tutorials
Zend developer zone for absolute beginnners
PHPFreaks tutorials

As for no 2. PHP is a scripting (programming) language. XML is a data description method. You can combine both, i.e. processing XML with PHP.
