Taking apart (and adding code to) message boards is a good practice.
Don't think about adopting too many techniques though. Most techniques
you find in message board code tend to lead you nowhere or be highly
inefficient.

Nick,
Try http://www.w3schools.com/php/. If you have a method of testing code
(PHP installed on your system or access to a PHP-enabled webserver), this
will be very useful - it's very hands-on. I've learned all the PHP I know
from this and the PHP docs at http://www.php.net. I hope this helps.
