control execution time and memory use ?

P: n/a
I'am using php 4.3.4 under linux. My php script connects
to a NNTP server and I want to control execution time and
memory use of this script.

PHP is compiled without pcntl support and I can not modify
PHP config ( max_exec_time,.....).

Is it possible to stop the process if its execution exceeds 10 seconds ?
Is it possible to stop the script if memory use exceeds 4 Mo ?

I want to do this inside the script.

Thank you in advance.
Lionel.
