classes and reference in php 4.x

class test()
{
function bob()
{
$this->var = '';
outsidefunc($this);
// why is $this->var still '' ?? in php 5 it's 'not empty'
}
}

outsidefunc(&$test)
{
$test->var = 'not empty';
}
how can I fix / get around problem?

solved!
I was actually doing call_user_func('outsidefunc',$this);
As the documentation states, parameters are not pass via reference
dunno why it works in php 5 then
