function parameters by reference "&"

in my project i am using the possibility to pass parameters by reference, ('&' leading the parametername)

I would like to ask, why this feature is being "deprecated"? It is a good possiblity to deal with parameters in recursive programing techniques.

Is it possible, to declare byreference in a other way then by leading "&"?
