How to create an plugin architecture?

Been googling on this for a while now but I can't seem to find any
generic information on ways to create an plugin architecture for your
application... so, anyone got suggestions on this? recommended reading?

If perchance you mean "create a PHP application that handles plugins" then
I'd recommend studying how Joomla does it. It's clean and effective.
