index.php

Hi,
Does a server automatically pickup index.php as the default page in the
same way as it would with index.html if the specific file is not defined?.

Hi,
If your Server is Apache, you must modify the httpd.conf.
Find the directive
DirectoryIndex
And add :
DirectoryIndex index.html index.php

Nope, default filename is a customizable setting in most web servers.

If it's an Apache server with PHP configured, though, it's quite likely
that index.php will be in the list.
