Looking for advice on whether to start from scratch with php install (and how)

Bottom line: would like to get a weblog and bulletin board going.
Would like to use phpBB2 and movabletype. I have movabletype working
using mysql.

Apache and php were on my linux red hat 7.2 out of the box it seems.
hello.php worked with the original setup.

Somewhere along the time of installing MySQL database & DBD::mysql and
a php-mysql rpm my hello.php stopped working and is now just showing
text-source in the web browser.

I did the typical troubleshoot that folks told me to do (like check
the httpd.conf for php settings and line-items).

Should I / Can I start from scratch with a fresh apache install?
(after backing up the config files) Fresh php install? I don't know
how to uninstall some of the things that are on the machine.

Is it more time-consuming to troubleshoot or just start from scratch. PHP used to work that's why I'm tempted to just re-install Linux.
