exif_read_data on Linux platform

Tom
I've put forth a request to my webhost to add this particular PHP function.
They made an attempt to recompile PHP with --enable-exif to no avail (i.e.
it didn't appear in phpinfo() ). Are there any other parameters or files
that need to be considered when compiling PHP? Also, is there any way to
test for a successful installation? They're running PHP 4.3.4.

Thank you in advance,

Tom
