obtaining email address.

I have been a victim of a website ( coded using php ) managing to obtain my
email address just by visiting the website. I know get loads of rubbish via
that email account.

How have they managed to do this?

The reason i ask is so i can stop it. Oh and also being into php a bit i
would also like to try it out :) just for fun.

So how else has that site got hold of my email address without us entering
any information at all?

You tell me. Where could they have possibly gotten your address only by you
simply visiting the site? Where is your e-mail address stored in your
browser?

Could it just be a fluke, i.e. they re a spammer and you were going to get
the email regardless of whether you visited the website in question?

For many people, it's in the browser preferences. And those preferences
are accessible to Javascript, at least for some browsers at some security
settings.

Also, if Javascript can manage to send an email to the webmaster
of the web site (without popups asking permission), your email
address may be added in the From: line of the email by your email
software.

Also, spammers get a lot of email addresses by trying all possible
combinations of common names with known domain names. Or they
harvest addresses from USENET or web sites.
