How to add a field to an existing database table?

Hi, I'm trying to make it possible to add a column/field to an
existing database table without transferring the information to a new
table (with the column added) altogether. Is there a simple MySQL
query I can use to do this?

Yes. Check the documentation @
http://www.mysql.com/doc/en/ALTER_TABLE.html

See ALTER TABLE.

Unfortunately, this is the way ALTER TABLE works. If you don't
have disk space for two copies of the table (briefly), it will
probably fail. Also, if you've got millions of rows, ALTER TABLE
can be slow. I'm not sure there is a faster alternative, though.
