Crashing on big files

When I use the "file" function e.g. to split a search-log into an
array, I get problems when the file is too big. It happens around 1 MB
or so. Does anybody know how to handle this problem?

What sort of problems? Error messages? What were they?

The problem is my server hides these under a nicely designed error page
which doesn't tell me anything. Oh well. Will check what happens on my
localhost.

Do you have access to your errorlog files? Also, isn't there some way to
explicitly redirect errors to the output? Or is that PERL? (Or am I just
half-asleep and making stuff up?)
