I went ahead and downloaded the latest version from the PEAR site. As it
turns out, Dietrich Ayala, who wrote NuSoap, is listed as the original
author of PEAR::SOAP!! Well, you could say it's one big happy family;-)
It does not look like NuSoap is actively maintained, but PEAR::SOAP is. So,
it makes sense to go with PEAR::SOAP.
Thanks for your quick input.

I am looking into deploying web services with PHP and would like to get
on a 'good horse' to start. I am aware of NuSoap and PEAR:SOAP. Does
anyone have any experience, good and/or bad with the following packages?
I have tried Pear::Soap; it works quite good. I have some exsamples you
can look at here: ftp://tomcat.edu.brock.dk/php/freedb.tar.gz
All the required packages can be downloaded here:
ftp://tomcat.edu.brock.dk/pear-soap
And precompiled packages of php4.3.2 for Redhat 7.3 and 9 and Debian
Unstable which have all required included for developing soap webservices,
can be found here: ftp://tomcat.edu.brock.dk/php4
