Image upload and manipulation

[repost of item originally in alt.comp.lang.php by mistake]

I'm building a new PHP-based site. One of the things I need to do is have
the users upload an image (photo) and then allow them to view it and
position it withing a cropping window of a predefined size so I can then do
the cropping and store the cropped image for presentation in a defined
format at a later time.

I'm looking around for such software and find quite a few products, but not
enough information to know which would meet my needs. I'm not looking for
gallery management or anything. If you have any recommendations on what to
use and, if I'm lucky, a reference to a site where I can see your
recommended software in action, I'd love to hear them.
