msqli as object and persistent connections?

If I do $conn = new msqli(...); do I automatically get persistent

According to the manual, there is no such thing as msqli_pconnect().

Unfortunately, the manual is also mute with respect to mysqli and
persistent connections. Sigh! Looks like it might be code reading time.
