how can I get rid of 127.0.0.1?

Hello,

Dreamweaver and php

I am developing a site and on the site I enable users to put screenshots
of software.

The images are not stored on my server/site but rather the user adds the
link to a database. The format of the link is
www.someplaceonthenet.com/images/somepicture.gif etc I instruct the
user to leave out http:// when adding the link

I then attempt to show this pic on a page by using dreamweaver and
choosing insert /image / and then choosing datasources and navigating to
the field that holds the location of the image.

This seems to work, when I view the page I can see an outline of the
image but no image, looking at the properties shows that the page is
trying to display

http://127.0.0.1/www.someplaceonthen...omepicture.gif

which is wrong...

Anyone have any ideas on how to get rid of the 127.0.0.1?

Thanks,

td.

That sounds pretty rediculous, since everyone can already use imageshack.us

But your best luck if your developing this on Windows, hence the
Dreamweaver, You can use the HOSTS file located in
<System_Root>\System32\ which then you modify to add whatever domain you
wish to resolve to your IP address such as localhost!

Since you cant just create domains out of the blue to resolve to your
host, I believe this is your solution to your problem, since windows
will look to your HOSTS file before resolving domains with its dns software.

As well, 127.0.0.1 cant just be replaced, but you can use other sets of
rules with the HOSTS file as 127.0.0.1 is automatically resolved to your
systems host and cant be resolved anywhere else!!

Fine, but when you put the link on the web page, *PUT BACK THE http:// *
http://127.0.0.1/www.someplaceonthen...omepicture.gif
www.someplaceonthenet.com/images/somepicture.gif is a *RELATIVE PATH*
to someplace on your site, equivalent to the above with the 127.0.0.1
in it. That's how it's supposed to be interpreted. And it is.

Put back the http:// before the host name.

Thanks Gordon. Tried that but *then* it becomes
http:/127.0.0.1/www.someplaceonthenet.com/images/somepicture.gif and
they (the pics) still do not show.

I have trouble believing that. Show me what the link HTML looks like
("View Source" in browser, not what the browser shows after
you click it). <a href="blah, blah, blah">Dumb link</a>

That really makes no sense at all. I agree with Sergej; post a snippet
of the HTML code. I'm not trying to degrade your intelligence, but
127.0.0.1 is the IP designation for "this" machine. I'm rather confused
as to what you're doing. If the users input information as strings, and
then it is put into a database, it should be taken out as a string, and
placed in an "echo" statement, following the http://. Then, the string
should be placed in an <img src="" /> or in an <a href=""
target="_self">I have made link!</a>.

Is it possible the user is putting "127.0.0.1" in the field? They might think
this is how your machine can access theirs.

That's a good point. although I doubt the user is intentionally placing
the address in the field, it is possible that the page is just
including the address and posting it to the database. I still think it
is unlikely and would like to see the code, but who knows.

I think you'll find its your dreamweaver settings. Dreamweaver is set to
use your local machine ie:127.0.0.1, when you then add a link
dreamweaver "corrects" the link to point to your local host. have you
set up a remote site in dreamweaver? so that it knows the correct uri.

We have found that the best way to get rid of 127.0.0.1 is to throw it off
the roof-top balcony. It's messy, but it's fun. Be careful there's nobody in
the yard...
