PHP first site

How should it be named the first site in a website in PHP? Is there any
special rule?
index.php for example?
I would like to know how it functions that by giving the wed address
(www.jfdhjdfh.de for example) comes the first site.
Is it like HTML that the first site must be named index.html?

Thank you.
Bettina

not that I am any expert,
but apache (for example) can be configured to look in any directory for
any file first, normally this is index.html FIRST, then index.php
You could ( I guess) change apache to look for anything.xml first if you
wanted.
In summary:
normally index.html is looked for, then index.php (so no index.html means
index.php is shown) however its not a hard and fast rule
HTH (and hasnt added to the confusion)

The best way to get the right answer on usenet is to post the wrong one.

In both IIS and Apache you can configure the page(s) to look for when
no page is specified. There's no rule as to what to name a php
indexpage, I usually use index.php

Like the other posters said, there is no rule.

Apache comes configured "out-of-the-box" with index.html as the default
page. Use the "DirectoryIndex" directive to change this.

(example):
DirectoryIndex index.php index.html

IIS comes with "default.htm" or possibly "default.asp" as the default
page. A buncha clicking ann typing will let you change that.

Also, both webservers (and most other webservers) will let you change this
on a per-directory basis. With Apache you cna use the
<Directory></Directory> directive or a .htaccess file in the directory in
question; IIS must be done from within the main IIS management tool (I'm
pretty sure).
