Have good content that lots of people link to. Attempts to fool search
engines often result in a lower page ranking as a penalty.

As far as I know there's no easy way to earn high rankings. The only
good way is to produce high quality content which makes your site
interesting to more people. Trying to "cheat" your way around this will
only work as long as the technique is below the search engines radar. In
the worst case cheating could get you banned from the search engine.

Of course there's things you can do to shoot yourself in the foot, but
you would be better off asking your favorite search engine what those
are:

If you have good stuff on your site that people want to see, you'll
wind up with more traffic and higher ranking.

Keep in mind that if a page ranking trick succeeds, but you haven't put
anything worthwhile on your site, all you will manage to accomplish
will be to drive more people to a site they'll look at for two seconds
and abandon. That will cost you money because you have to pay to serve
those futile pageviews.
