capture and display thumbnail of url

Any idea how places like http://girafa.com/ and http://www.thumbshots.net/ are able to do this

http://www.thumbshots.com provides the service but I can't pay 25$ a month for the low volume that I would use it for

The closest thing I have been able to find is here http://www.babysimon.co.uk/khtml2png/index.html which doesn't look to promising

By using an HTML rendering engine like Mozilla's Gecko and save/display the
pictures.

I think I have found a solution for me

Will show me a thumbnail screen shot of pretty much any site I tried so I
think I can just grab these from the database of url's and save a coppy to
my site
