Validating bank account numbers

Hi,

I am trying to validate bank numbers
( the number that identifies a bank)
and bank account numbers.

Is there a certain algorithm or
do you know any generell rules like
how long the numbers have to be at least /most?

thanks,

Stefan

Are you talking about ABA (routing) numbers? Those are 9 digits
(always). Not sure how account numbers are defined. Wikipedia has an
article about ABA routing numbers:

This is HIGHLY country-specific. Typically, the
central bank or a self-regulatory group assigns
each bank a rounting number and sometimes sets
standards as to how many digits an account number
should contain. Additionally, SWIFT (Society for
Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunications)
has its own set of codes for participating banks.
