Google is the best book. The last time I bought a book to learn a
programming language was more than eight years ago because my
university class required it.

"MySQL" by Paul DuBois seemed to be well regarded so I bought it and it is
pretty easy to read and understand. It has 1294 pages including a chapter on
programming with PHP.

Assuming you already have some knowledge of MySQL (which I am sure
you do, since we have been corresponding in PHP-related newsgroups
for a while), I would highly recommmend "High-Performance MySQL"
by Jeremy Zawodny and Derek Balling.

Cheers,

I don't know about that. Newsgroup posts tend to be short and are
imperfect at giving one a background understanding of important issues.
The source materials and manuals are overwhelming and it is difficult
to know where to start with them. Good, well written, in-depth
tutorials are few and far between. It is useful when a good writer can
patiently explain how things work and give some guidance about what is
more important and what is less important.
