php function for syntax higlighting in html ?

There are many sites that offer code examples with syntax higlighting. Is
there a way to generate the highlighting with a php function
automatically ?
How is such a thing done generally ?

I have the image, that this will only highlight PHP Code, if so, is it
custamizable so that any Code will be higllighted ?
