Sorting problem

Hi,
I am trying to add the finishing touches to a code that I have created which sorts data entries in a file according to numeric value. This is the code:

$x = 0;

        @surge[$x] = substr($_,39,12);
        @surge[$x] .= "\n";
        $x=$x+1;
    }
}
close(FH);
@sortsurge = sort {$b <=> $a} @surge;
print NF @sortsurge;
close(NF);
 

My problem is that I want to take another section from each line, aside from the data values. Basically I want it to print the date from each line but obviously correspond it to the correct data value and output that to the new file. Does anyone know how I can do this? Thanks in advance.

Hi,

What's your data file look like? Can't you just use substr again to grab the date? If your data is delimited you can split on the delimiter to separate it into its elements (i.e. my ($date, $element1, $element2, ...) = split(",", $_); ).
