UNIX on the Mainframe

Has anyone worked with Unix System Services(USS)? It is suppose to be an UNIX environment on a zOS Mainframe.

I am trying to submit PERL scripts and FTP using PERL and have been unable to make a connection. I can FTP thru the command line.
