using proxy

what is the correct way to use a proxy server? i've set up a user
agent named $browser and assigned it
$browser->agent('Mozilla/4.0(compatible;MSIE 6.0;Windows NT 5.0)' );
print $browser->agent; prints the above info.
i then have $browser->proxy('http', $proxy);
to check and see if it worked i used print $browser->proxy; and it
prints nothing but a new line. Is it working and supposed to not
print anything? Thanks:)
