Market for Perl Programmers

1 New Member
Hi there,

Is there still a market for Perl programmers? I am a relatively recent graduate of Computer Science. I only have two years under my belt. My longest contract involved a lot of programming in Perl. I spent a year working for a consulting company, working in a LAMP environment. I spent my time there working on a number of web apps using Perl/CGI scripts, and did prototyping of web apps and testing. I would say I'm a junior-to-intermediate Perl programmer. I want to enhance my employability. Should I leave Perl alone and concentrate more on Python and PHP.

Thanks,
Rodriguez

I am starting to learn Python but I want to know how the job market looks for programming using Python. I really don't see many jobs (probably one or two) that require Python experience at all. Most DBA and SA positions that I have seen require Perl and most development position require Java or C++ so how can learning Python benefit my career if there are little to no chance that an employer will require the use of Python or consider using...

I surveyed market penetration of various server-side technologies using Google's search facility and posted them to the microsoft.public.inetserver.asp.general newsgroup. Results are in number of occurrences of each file extension: FileExt Occurrences ==================== ..PHP 324M ..ASP 243M ..CGI 171M

This is just anecdotal, but I still find it interesting. Take it for what it's worth. I'm interested in hearing others' perspectives, just please don't turn this into a pissing contest. I'm in the process of converting some old perl programs to python. These programs use some network code and do a lot of list/dict data processing. The old ones work fine but are a pain to extend. After two conversions, the python versions are...

I'm looking at C# and ASP .NET these days. Visual Sudio 2005 looks like a neat dev. env. But before committing, I would like to know more about the current status of these tools. I noticed, that my site hoster does not support ASP at all. And more providers do not... PHP however, IS supported a lot, but does not have anything like .NET facilities, does it ? What is the status of the language wars these days ? ASP is still the way to go ?

Can I feel even better about using perl vs. python, as apparently python's dependence of formatting, indentation, etc. vs. perl's "(){};" etc. makes writing python programs perhaps very device dependent. Whereas perl can be written on a tiny tiny screen, and can withstand all kinds of users with various disabilities, etc.? Also perl is easier to squeeze into makefiles.

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...
