how to code for data mining

I have to code for data mining, predicting on what the customer would prefer to buy on checking his previous product selection. I'm new to this concept and i'm in a state of confusion that, where to start from. Some please provide me some guidance on this

I believe amazon and netflix uses the k-nearest neighbor algorithm for some of their recommendations. You could look into that algorithm.
