ora00932 inconsistent data types: expected date got number when i update a date

update bw_ymast set YST_V_YEAR=2012 where yst_v_year=2013

What is the data type of YST_V_YEAR?

The error suggests that yst_v_year is date typed column, so you should use to_date format function.
If it is a year column what about other fieldd: day,month, you want to update them to what values?
