Proposing a new newsgroup

I'm proposing a new newsgroup, to be called "comp.databases.design".

The purpose would be to collect in one place discussions concerning how to
design a database that are common to Oracle, DB2, SQL Server, Sybase, and
dozens of other DBMS products that are generally called relational.

There are a lot of issues of how to compose the data into columns, tables
and schemas, or how to use foreign keys, or how to set up indexes that
are not product specific.

By providing a place whose name suggests this topic, it might reduce the
amount of cross posting that people with design questions commonly engage
in. It might also provide a forum for some lively discussion.

What do you think?

Isn't comp.databases for that? Or I think there is one on database theory.

Thanks, Jim.

I'll lurk on comp.databases for a while to see if generic database design
questions surface there. Good tip.

comp.databases.theory is also a good lead. In fact, I proposed this
newsgroup over there, initially. At least two or three of the regulars gave
a positive comment.

There are two kinds of threads that surface repeatedly in
comp.databases.theory:

One is the fairly standard generic design question, covering a broad range
of depth.

The other is an ongoing discussion of how a Relational DBMS should work, if
one were to be built that really conformed to the relational data model.
This second topic is really about the theory of DBMS construction, rather
than the theory of Database construction.

That's what got me started thinking along the lines of a new newsgroup. But
it's possible that the need isn't really there. That's what I'm exploring
now.

Again, thanks for your input.
