trying to connect to database

1
whenever i tried to run a query on my database it kept on giving me this error
ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor. Make sure connection parameters are correct and try again.

I've tried so many possible ways to check my link and they all seem to be correct. What i really need to understand is what exactly does this mean?
