replicating a database

We are migrating from SCO with 8i to SuSe SLES 8 with 9iR2 on our
Compaq i586 backup server "BKUP". This has already been done on our
development server "DEV" and production server "PROD". The RDBMS and
database on DEV, BKUP, and PROD are all named the same and stored
within one (~48Gb) filesystem. Besides the HOST name in listener.ora,
I am not aware of any other differences between the RDBMS or databases
on these servers.

Last week, due to the loss of two hard drives and our ARCserve tape
backup catalog, DEV was completely restored from a backup tape. After
recovering DEV's database, it appears to function correctly.

To migrate BKUP, we are first going to install the OS. I am then
considering "creating" BKUP's RDBMS and database by restoring the
Oracle filesystem from a PROD backup tape. I am also considering
recommending this as our database recreation method in certain(?)
scenarios.

Though this method seems efficient and successful, I entreat the
expertise of this group's members to point out any problems or issues
with it. Any comments are greatly appreciated.
