ORA-01427: single-row subquery returns more than one row

Actuall in this query i am trying to to compare the monthly change percentage
i ,e january 2007 aganest dec 2006 and the value is available in one table
and same column one below the other

when i am writing query with aggregate function query is working perfectly.

select sum(value_dr_agg)-( select sum(b.value_dr_agg)from dat b where b.start_dte='01-dec-2006') from dat
where dat.start_dte='01-jan-2007'
group by start_dte

the same query when i am writing without aggregate function its giving me
error ORA-01427: single-row subquery returns more than one row

select value_dr_agg-( select value_dr_agg from dat where start_dte='01-dec-2006') from dat
where dat.start_dte='01-jan-2007'

select value_dr_agg-( select value_dr_agg from dat where start_dte='01-dec-2006') from dat
where dat.start_dte='01-jan-2007'

maybe your inside select produce more than 1 row:

select sum(b.value_dr_agg)from dat b where b.start_dte='01-dec-2006'

check it first
