Oracle 10g and XP

1
I'm running Windows XP Service pack 2
I have 1GB of RAM
I have an AMD 64 processor 3000+

I'm a back end oracle programmer by trade with commercial experience of 8i.

I'm trying to get myself up to speed with a later release of Oracle and Java so that I can find a new job.

I have downloaded Oracle 10g onto my PC as well as Jdeveloper and SQL developer.

The PC now takes an age to boot up. Getting to the windows sign on screen is as it was before, not lightning fast but quick enough. Once I select my user name and enter my password to start XP, well I may as well go off make a cup of tea, mow the lawn and do a crossword.

You know the little tune that Windows plays when XP starts, it is taking five minutes from the desktop being presented before that tune is heard.

Looking at performance on task manager I can see that Physical Memory is 1047792K
Available memory is 296660K
System Cache is 439548K
That to my non techy eye appears to be sufficient.

In processes Oracle is taking 203568K

I've disabled McAfee to see if that was causing the problem but it didn't have a marked effect on timings.

Am I trying to run Oracle on an underpowered PC? Is my memory the root of the problem?

Is there a way that I can start Oracle manually for those occasions when I want to use it?

The 1 gig of ram will be an issue also depending on which version of 10g you are running. if you dont need all the extras i would use XE (its not as much of a pig). between windows and the fact that 10g Enterprise wants at least a gig you will be doing a lot of swaping...
