I am trying to figure out some group function exercises and cannot get the script to run without errors. The question is Determine how many books are in the cooking category. I am working from an appendix which lists various categories of different books. Please advise as I want to grasp this concept.

As you are specific to the category "cooking"
you can use the following code.
select count(books) from table_name
where uppper(category)='COOKING';

If you need to check the number of books in each category , you can use
select count(books), category
from table_name
group by category;
