oracle 9i installation on debian linux

I am trying to install oracle 9i on debian.
The oracle 9i linux installation manual provides a checklist
of pre-installation changes that have to be made to linux
before installing oracle.

I am new to debian - I have used red hat and sun solaris before.
The oracle manual describes how to make permanent changes to
linux - for instance, how to set shmmax. The manual refers to unix
directories that either don't exist or in a differnet location on debian linux.
Any and all information about how to configure debian linux for oracle 9i will be appreciated.

Also, "where in the vast debian documentation" is there any reference to
making permenent changes to shmmax and other changes to
the debian configuration?
