It's google's way of making sure they have a product in social. Social networking is the #1 consumer of time on the internet right now.

They've attempted in the past to force it on the users by initiatives such as Buzz and Profiles etc. From what i've seen and read about, Google's product addresses some of the privacy issues that facebook faces and also is a bit more intuitive.

They also want to create a sharing mechanism for content found in it's search engines. Hence the launch of +1. The search results now feature a +1 button next to the link.

Social + Search, i believe that's what Google is cooking up. ;)

As a networking site I find Google plus very limited. I have profiles on hundreds of sites and its one of my least favorite.

Still we are not aware of all the features of G+ and it's limited. So we just can't compare them but i can say we are used to FB. :)

Google plus is different because anything that you share there or post is searchable in google. I know others also but this one is easier to find. you just need to use your keywords.

Google+, in addition to providing the profiles and features of Facebook, is also able to integrate with the Google search engine. Other Google products are also integrated, such as Google Adwords and Google Maps. With the development of Google Personalized Search and other location-based search services, Google+ allows for targeted advertising methods, navigation services, and other forms of location-based marketing and promotion.
