IP Address assignment problem in a 2 server environment

228 100+
Hello,

I am on a windows netwrok that has this structure basically:

Internet line is connected to router PC running linux. Its IP is 192.168.141.252. From the router, it goes directly to switch. There is a DHCP server connected to that switch which assigns IP to computers in building one.

From the same switch goes a line thru fiber optic to VLAN switch. Then from that VLAN switch , which acts as a distrubter to 3 others locations, goes a fiber optic going to building number 2. That fiber optic is connected to switch which in turn is connected to a server. That server gives IP addresses to computers in building number 2.

Now, server 2's ip address range is 143. ie. 192.168.143.xxx. THe problem is now that computers in building number one which must be 141, are getting address 143. That has caused a lot of problems with internet and intranet connections.

I just cant understand how this happened cos it is brand new problem. Configuration is not changed and it has been running smoothly for over 3 years now. I am going crazy. ANy ideas please?

Hi this is just best guess here. It sounds like the network traffic is not segmented. So the traffic to go to any location from any server. Which could be one of the issues. I know you said that it work for a round 2 years before. SO what is your DHCP release time after giving ip its possible it was up to 2 years. Then i guess it picked an ip address from which ever dhcp was available.
If you are allowed to temporarily disconnect 141 from 143
if you disconnect from the switch getting to server 2 and try to renew your ip.
This will tell if the traffic is overlapping and i would suggest routing or segementing the network. My opinion of course.
