XP to Vista Networking headache - Access Denied

I have a home network running wired and wireless via a D-Link DSL Modem/Router. For some time, I've been trying to overcome the problem of not being able to get any of the XP Home (SP3) machines to access my Vista HPx32 (SP1) laptop through the wire. (Though vice versa works.)

I can push and pull stuff when the Vista laptop is doing the 'driving'. The XP machines all see the laptop - but when I try to push/pull any files to/from the shared folders on the Vista laptop, I get the following message:

"\\Nigelhp9595l-pc\E drive is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Access is denied."

In the Network & Sharing Center on the Vista laptop, I have Network discovery, file sharing and public folder sharing set to 'on' and the connection is a private network.

Interestingly, the XP machines CAN access the 'public' folder (and sub-folders) on the Vista laptop without problem - it's just I can't get into any of the other shared drives. It's nothing to do with my Bullguard v.8 firewall because I have the same problems when the protection is off (on all machines). I also have the workgroup renamed to MSHOME.

Can anyone give me an idea of where to look now? (I'm no IT guru, BTW, though I feel I've exhausted just about every report of this problem on the web forums. I'm hoping someone here can tell me where to look next... I'm determined to get this to work!)

TIA

Shot in the dark here but.... Did you check and make sure that the everyone group had read access to both the share and the folder itself?
