Workgroup Problem

my problem is i have a laptop and pc and need to exchange files between them
so i set a network and the laptop seems to see the pc and everything is fine But when i try to ping the laptop form the PC it asks me for a username and a password (Authentication Required)

and i dont know whats the username and pass
can anyone help me plz

When you try to ping it? That's weird. Can you post the result of the following for both computers:

Click on the Start menu. Click 'Run.' Type in 'cmd' and press Enter. Type the command 'ipconfig /all' and press enter.

Also, how are these two connected? Router, hub, crossover cable?

By chance is the laptop a Vista based OS? If so Google could be your best friend in solving this problem.
