Vista & XP Networking

1
I bought a new HP computer with MS Vista Home Premium and am trying to network my old Dell Windows XP Home. I got the network working with HP's help. But HP tells me that for the network to work, I have to turn-off firewalls on both computers because it is a MS Vista issue. They seem to be right because when I turn off the firewalls, I can access folders from both computers and share printer. But when I turn-on the firewalls, neither computer can be accessed from the other. Is there a work around this problem? I do not want to operate the network with firewalls turned-off for obvious reasons. Any help and guidance is appreciated.

My setup is as follows - Cable Modem to Netgear Wireless Router
Bothe computers hard-wired by ethernet cable to the Netgear Router
Both computers in the same work group - "WORKGROUP"
IP addresses in the same range and subnet mask the same

I believe you are using Windows firewall, all you need to do is find out what ports are used when access a shared folder and once you know the port open those ports in the firewall and away you go.
