Vista/XP Network Password?

I have set up my network, PC1 is running Vista, PC2 running XP. I have no problems using Vista pc to access files on XP pc. When trying to access files and printer from the XP pc I am asked for a user name and password. I have never used any passwords on the network before now, and don't recall being asked to set a password during creating the network. PC's are networked through a Netgear DG834 modem/router/switch, and neither have any problem accessing the internet. Would appreciate any help in being able to bypass the need for a user name/password

i was in something of the same boat. i finally gave up and added a new user on the vista (with no password). then on the xp, i navaigated to the vista pc and clicked. when it asked for user, i typed it in, left password blank and said rememeber me. hopefully it will. in any case, that got me where i needed to be. hope it helps you!

Hi fergie5500,

i too have exactly the same problem as you first mentioned.no password on my vista although i do have a password on my xp machine. i can file transfer from vista pc to xp pc but not from my xp pc to vista pc. networking is through a d link dsl-504

From xp pc my vista pc wants user name and password. i have tried a few times different combination but still have no joy...did you find an easier way to fix the problem rather than make new user names?

to authenticate to the xp machine you might have to say the computer name(domain name)\username. if you right click on my computer(the xp computer), and click properties, then click the "Computer Name" tab, then the "Change" button. That comes up with a box that says your computers name. Copy that. Then, when your trying to connect to the printer, and you have to log-in, paste the computer name, then the forward slash (above the enter key), then a username and password from the xp machine. So the setup is;

User Name = <computer name>\<username>
Password = <password>

try that.

I have a similar problem except it is the other way around. I can move files just fine from XP to the vista PC but when i try to access the XP machine from vista it asks for a username and password. Have tried the <pcname>\<username> idea but that didn't work either.
